What is Instagram?

Instagram is a free photo and video sharing social media site.  People can upload photos or videos and share them with their followers or with a select group of friends. They can also view, comment and like posts shared by their friends on Instagram. Anyone 13 and older can create an account by registering an email address and selecting a username.  However,  with parental permission,  Instagram does allow accounts for those under the age of 13 as long as the terms of use (ie the content uploaded) are upheld.

The Risks

As with any Social Media tool,  being mindful of potential risks is important.  Whilst the site itself is safe and regularly monitored its still advisable to monitor a childs activity.  By default,  all posts are set to public, so its really important that you check your privacy settings.  If you don’t want everyone to see your pictures or be able to comment and share them,  you must change your settings (click here for instructions).  You can ensure that only people you know or the people you want can see what you post.  You will have to confirm you know a person when you set your account to private before they can see anything you post.  When a post is public,  anyone can view and comment on the image!
